Coffee Inspiration in the Cup

We went in search of more coffeisms, inspirational and funny coffee quotes and anything else coffe-esque. This is what we found:

I like big cups and I cannot lie. (Really depends on what coffee you put in them! Good quality coffee beans please.)

Coffee is not just a beverage. It’s a cup of liquid sanity. (We couldn’t agree more. If we wrote something weird, clearly we didn’t have enough coffee that day. Had a good day? Take credit. Had a bad day? Blame it on the coffee…or lack thereof.)

If you like coffee as much as we do, you probably had a giggle at these! And if you like coffee as much as we do you’d probably also want to buy coffee from us, right?! After all we sell some of the best coffee beans on the planet! Fresh roasted coffee beans, green coffee beans, ground coffee beans…coffee beans all round. As someone really clever said: Good coffee smells like freshly ground heaven. Amen.

There’s Nothing Like Coffee…

There really is nothing quite as inspirational as the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans in the morning. If you ever worked in a coffee shop that roasted their beans fresh, you know what we mean. As we sell green coffee beans we sometimes roast ourselves, or take a deep breath when we open the bags of fresh roasted coffee beans we also sell. Then we have to use them all very quickly so they don’t go stale. It’s the perfect excuse to use the beans all that much faster…

As coffee really does inspire us beyond that first refreshing cuppa in the morning (we do work with it after all) we thought we’d share some funny “coffeology” we found lately. Or maybe not funny, more like…profound. If you believe in the power of coffee that is.

Coffeeology…

When you smell the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans you know you can’t go wrong…well not very wrong at least. Maybe you had a bad day and are looking for something to perk you up, or you’re just starting your day and looking for energy to get through it, but one thing is for sure: the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans can’t but help cheer you up.

For us java lovers that special cuppa is definitively a life saver. Always there to perk you up! For us that make a living out of coffee, what kind of fresh roasted coffee beans we use really makes a difference – we taste every cup like it was a glass of wine, noting the different nuances in taste. We also come up with silly jokes about coffee, research new coffee gadgets, fill our days with making sure our clients get the best coffee on the market and the best supplies to go with it. We listen to customers’ thoughts about coffee, our own thoughts about coffee, the suppliers thoughts about coffee… In other words: there’s a lot of coffee going through our minds (rather literally). So when we find jokes about coffee, or little sayings…we get excited. We laugh. And we realize maybe we think too much about coffee, but hopefully you will love the below photo as much as we did!

Enjoy the coffeeology – with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, naturally!

Coffee sayings and phrases

Roasted coffee beans in Ethiopia
Roasted coffee beans in Ethiopia

It’s a measure of how important coffee has become to our culture that it’s found its way into the language, via so many sayings, phrases and proverbs such as: “Wake up and smell the coffee” – a commonly-used phrase meaning to ‘pay attention to a situation and try to do something about it’. It seems to be American in origin, although there’s no record of its first use. Example of usage: “If first-time buyers think it’s easy to get on the property ladder, they need to wake up and smell the coffee.””Coffee-housing” – Used as a verb, the Cassell Dictionary of Slang defines this as a mid-19th century phrase meaning to gossip or chatter. Originally in use among the fox-hunting fraternity, it refers to the perceived behaviour of those frequenting 18th century coffee houses. Example of usage: “Is Jane coming, or is she still coffee-housing?”

“Coffee and cocoa” – a 20th century rhyming slang phrase, meaning “say so”. Abbreviated and popularised on BBC radio in the 1950s as “I should cocoa”.

Most cultures seem to have a proverb involving coffee, such as “coffee should be black as hell, strong as death and sweet as love” – an old Turkish saying, which does perfectly describe the strong, sugary cups of espresso-type coffee popular in Turkey, which is more usually brewed in a saucepan rather than a coffee machine to increase its strength. There are several other Turkish coffee proverbs, in line with that culture’s long relationship with the coffee bean – another is, “Coffee and tobacco are complete repose”. In a similar vein is the Ethiopian proverb, “Coffee and love taste better when hot.” The Dutch are less hot-blooded, with their proverb being, “Coffee has two virtues – it is wet and warm”.

Whether funny or true, these phrases track our relationship with coffee going back centuries, and emphasise how important it is both to the individual and to society as a whole.
