Coffee fads: coffee with added ‘relaxation’

Now we’ve really heard it all. Caffeine can be a useful and natural stimulant if you want to perk yourself up a little, and if you want to drink coffee later in the day you’ve always got the choice of going de-caff. So when we heard about the US coffee shop selling coffee infused with cannabis, we admit we failed to see the attraction!

The coffee shop in question, called Caffeine Underground, is based in New York and sells coffee infused with cannabidiol (CBD), the non-psychoactive compound in cannabis. That means it doesn’t give you a ‘high’, but reportedly has other benefits including relieving pain and inflammation, reducing anxiety, and relieving nausea. As in much of the rest of the world, it’s illegal to use marijuana for recreational purposes in New York, but CBD is legal. It’s commonly used in oils, and you can also use it in electronic cigarettes. In the UK, it’s legal to take it as a food supplement and CBD oil is available at UK health food shops as of this month (March 2018). CBD is extracted from the hemp plant rather than the marijuana plant, as hemp has naturally high levels of CBD and low levels of THC, the hallucinogenic compound.

According to the proprietors, the brew is selling well – but there are no reports on what the special ingredient does to the taste!
